Good afternoon,

To dispel any rumors, one of our employees has tested positive for COVID-19.  With respect to this individual’s right to privacy, I just wish to notify everyone that I have spoken to the individual and they are doing well.

The department is taking extra precautions as a result of this incident.  The vehicles that were subject to contamination will be brought for further in-depth cleaning tomorrow.  Additionally, any areas within police headquarters that may have been contaminated will be professionally cleaned in the next few days.

Any member who is feeling symptomatic should use caution and go to the Stony Brook University testing area for further evaluation. Signage will be posted directing you to the COVID-19 testing areas. 

If you are symptomatic and are tested you should remain home in a self-quarantine until the results of your test have been provided to you. Please remain in contact with a PBA representative and your chain of command prior and post testing. At this time, the individual officer will be responsible for using your own accrued time to cover any work days missed.

The administration has authorized uniformed personnel that they are no longer required to wear ties while in the winter uniform. The winter uniform can continued to be worn without the tie to afford uniformed personnel a further level of protection while engaging with members of the community.

If you are showing symptoms please don’t come to work and risk contaminating your fellow officers and members of the community. Please refer to the attachment in this email for further guidance on self-care and monitoring. I want to reiterate these are trying times, everyday new information, and precautions are being disseminated.  Please remain flexible while we deal with this evolving situation.
